About the ancestors and descendants of John Wiseman (1902-1980) and Mary Ann Bainbridge (1905-1963)

I am indebted to John Griffiths, my late cousin Elizabeth's husband, for the thorough research he carried out into the Bainbridge family history.

I must also acknowledge the invaluable contribution of my namesake, Dave Wiseman, of Preston, in respect of the Wiseman family history from the birth of James Wiseman in about 1777 to that of my grandfather, Joseph Wiseman, in Clifford, Yorkshire, one hundred years later.

The website also explores other branches of my family, such as descendants of my great grandmother Jane Mallams' siblings and of her first husband, James Hair, as well as those of my grandmother Isabella Davison's first husband, Thomas William Pearson, encompassing the surnames of Gouldburn, Cook and Webb.

In 2009 I researched the descendants of my great-grandfather John Wiseman's siblings. I was thrilled to establish contact with several third cousins, the great grand-children of Catherine Wiseman and George Wensworth. By 2012 I had added some 80 names to the family tree, spread over five generations.

In 2012 I was surprised and delighted to be contacted, through TribalPages, by David Williams, a descendant of my grandmother Isabel Davison's brother Andrew Mallams Davison. David's mother Phoebe Davison was my second cousin. As a result I added over 20 new names to the website!

Then early in 2014, as a result of research on Ancestry.com, I made contact with my Canadian third cousin Eric Ward, a descendant of my great grandmother Jane Mallams' brother Andrew (the sub-postmaster).

Later in 2014 I established contact with a 'Norwegian' fourth cousin, Mavene Kullerud, a descendant of Mary Bainbridge, sister of my great, great grandfather William Bainbridge. As a result I added more than 40 new names.

Early in 2015 much of my energy was devoted to resolving the riddle of my great grandmother's sister, born about 1831, whose name in the 1841 census had been variously transcribed by genealogical websites as Christina,Christiana and Christian. Curiously, though, a Catherine Mallams, having had a child, William Armstrong Mallams, in 1852, went on to marry a John Lowes in 1859. In each census from 1861 to 1901 her name was recorded as Catherine. However, when in 1911(as a widow)she was living with her daughter and her family, she was recorded as Christen and her death the following year, at the age of 80, was registered in this name. So I concluded that Christen and Catherine were one and the same person. As a result, after researching the descendants of her son William and the children of her marriage, by the end of February I had added another 72 names to the database.

In 2016, thanks to research by my elder daughter Catherine's father-in-law, I learned that my grandsons Charlie and Matthew were direct descendants of Mary Boleyn ("The Other Boleyn Girl"), sister of Anne Boleyn, through her daughter Catherine Carey, whom some historians believe to have been fathered by Henry VIII. Whether or not this was so, my grandsons can boast an illustrious heritage of deceased and living royal relatives, however distant, including Queen Elizabeth II herself and all of her descendants!

Towards the end of 2019 I set about converting into narrative form all the research I had carried out into my paternal heritage and in April 2021 I had a limited number of copies of my book printed, under the title 'The lives and times of John (Jack) Wiseman (1902-1980), his Ancestors, Descendants and other Relatives'.
